For many people, the college years provide the pinnacle of their social lives. Arguably at no other stage in a person’s life is there such social freedom. There are a host of social options provided by the many student societies, parties, balls and general ‘toing and froing’ of college life. Although it can seem a little frenetic and daunting at the start, one soon slips into the habit of maintaining a busy social schedule between lectures and studying in the library.
Undoubtedly international students living in a new country require a little extra courage before diving into the college social scene. You will find it well worth your time to get involved in as much activities as possible however (allowing for work and study of course!), as the new friends you acquire will make your stay in Ireland all the more pleasurable.
Societies
Most third-level colleges have a huge number of different societies to choose from, catering for all interests, tastes and obsessions. Societies can be subject-based such as law or German, or issue-driven such as St Vincent de Paul, but most defy classification and are simply based on a shared interest like supporting Manchester United, juggling or an interest in classical history. Joining a society works on a number of levels. You get to meet like-minded people and make friends, while gaining useful skills and experience (and of course the odd free gift!).
An international student society exists in every college with international students. Together with other non-Irish students (including in all likelihood students from your own country), you will enjoy social occasions such as themed parties, as well as day trips to places in Ireland of cultural, historical and natural interest. The international student society represents the best way to settle into your new life in the company of other students who are in exactly the same situation.
Canteen & College Bar
All Irish third-level campuses now have comfortable socialising facilities. The college canteen is often a hive of activity, where relatively cheap food can be bought and eaten, and where gossip and study tips are swapped between classes. Campus bars often take on a mythic quality, with many stories told and friends made over a quiet game of pool in the evenings. Music and comedy performances are a regular occurrence in the college bar. Many students also socialise off-campus, with local bars, clubs, cinemas and cafes offering student discounts and welcoming the extra trade with open arms!
